Exploring Japan is a fun-filled and hassle-free experience thanks to its efficient and comprehensive transportation networks. That includes exploring the town of Shōnai (庄内) in Yamagata Prefecture (山形県), which is fairly accessible by train. But do you know that the best way to explore the region is by cycling?
Shonai: A hidden gem in Yamagata Prefecture
Shōnai is located in the north-central region of Yamagata Prefecture, and has direct access via the Uetsu Main Line (羽越本線) by train from Niigata Station (新潟駅). The town includes several municipalities, one of which is Tsuruoka (鶴岡), which is known for its rich gastronomy and sacred landmarks.
Tsuruoka: the gateway to Yamagata’s heritage
Tsuruoka is a city in Shonai, Yamagata Prefecture that is home to a rich history and heritage, but did you know that one of the best ways to get around the city is by cycling? The city is fairly flat so biking is easy and enjoyable, and better yet, electronic biking, or e-biking in short, has become an easily available option so riders need not peddle all the time!
With an e-bike, visitors can learn more about Tsuruoka and Shonai as a whole without having to get around on foot all the time. E-biking is fairly simple, and there are tours available that come with English-speaking guides who will guide you to various landmarks and regale you with their respective histories.
Of all the fascinating landmarks that visitors should check out in Tsuruoka, the most outstanding one would be Mount Haguro (羽黒山).
Explore the wonders of Mount Haguro
Mount Haguro is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa (出羽三山), and they are a sacred landmark for followers of Shugendō (修験道). Followers will engage in religious pilgrimages that include climbing 2,446 stone steps up Mount Haguro, and this trail is also open to visitors to the mountain.
The stone steps may be a challenge for some visitors, but those who complete them will be rewarded with access to Dewa Sanzan Sanjingо̄ Saiden (出羽神社三神合祭殿), Mount Haguro’s main shrine that sits at the summit. Visitors can also roam around and discover the many historical structures in the area, and simply soak in the rich natural beauty of the mountain.
