Akita Prefecture (秋田県), nestled in Japan’s northern Tohoku Region (東北), is a treasure trove of cultural heritage and breathtaking winter landscapes. Known for its heavy snowfall and serene beauty, Akita transforms into a white wonderland during winter, a snowy haven that is the stage for some of Japan’s most enchanting winter festivals.
As a region traditionally reliant on rice harvests, many of Akita’s winter festivals fall in the frigid month of February, celebrating the traditional New Year and praying for a bountiful harvest and blessings in the upcoming year.
In this article, we’ll delve into six of Akita’s most captivating winter festivals that blend tradition, community, and seasonal charm!
① Namahage Sedo Festival
A fusion of folklore and firelight, the Namahage Sedo Festival (なまはげ柴灯まつり Namahage Sedo Matsuri) in Oga City (男鹿市) offers an unforgettable experience. The festival centres on namahage (なまはげ), mythical ogre-like deities clad in straw costumes and fearsome masks. According to local legend, namahage visit homes on New Year’s Eve to drive out laziness and misfortune, ensuring prosperity for the coming year.

Held at Shinzan Shrine (真山神社), the Namahage Sedo Festival brings this tradition to life with dynamic performances. Visitors will be treated to the sight of villagers dressing up as namahage and going around the community to caution people, and encourage diligence. A must-see is the namahage fiercely dancing around a bonfire.

② Kamihinokinai Paper Balloon Festival
On 10 February each year, the skies above Kamihinokinai in Semboku City (仙北市) come alive during the Kamihinokinai Paper Balloon Festival (上桧木内の紙風船上げ Kamihinokinai no Kamifūsen-age), as over 60 giant paper balloons (紙風船kamifūsen), illuminated from within, are released into the night.
Ranging from 3–12 metres in height, each paper balloon is meticulously handcrafted and painted with intricate designs of warriors and beautiful ladies, and carries wishes and prayers for the New Year.
This tradition dates back to the Edo Period (1603–1868), as a way to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The vibrant paper balloons, glowing against the snowy backdrop, create a magical atmosphere.
Visitors can participate by writing their wishes on smaller paper balloons, which are mass-launched for a scene reminiscent of the movie Tangled, making the event both interactive and personal.

③ Kariwano Tug of War
In the small town of Kariwano in Daisen City (大仙市), the Kariwano Tug of War (刈和野の大綱引き Kariwano no Otsunahiki) transforms a simple rope-pulling contest into a symbolic ritual. Recognised as one of Japan’s Intangible Cultural Properties, this event has a history of over 500 years.
The tug-of-war contest pits the North side of the town against the South, with the outcome believed to predict the year’s harvest. If the North side wins, it is believed that the price of rice will increase; if the South side wins, it is believed that there will be a bountiful harvest.
The two enormous straw ropes used for the event weighs each up to 10 tons, requiring the combined effort of hundreds of participants. The festival is accompanied by festive music and lively cheer “Joyasono!” (ジョウヤサノー), making it a thrilling experience for both participants and spectators.

④ Rokugo Kamakura
A traditional New Year’s festival with over 700 years of history, the Rokugo Kamakura (六郷のカマクラ Rokugo no Kamakura) is held in Misato Town (美郷町), offering a rustic and intimate atmosphere.
Held every year over a 5-day period from 11–15 February, the event has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan, and comprises three main rituals:
- Toshigoi (年ごい): to pray for abundant harvests and safe prosperity
- Akumabarai (悪魔払い): to expel bad harvests and misfortune
- Toshi-uranai (年占い): to predict the year’s fortune
The undisputed festival highlight is definitely the Takeuchi (竹うち Bamboo Battle), which takes place on the evening of the last day. During the exciting “battle”, participants are split into two teams: North and South, and wield 7–8-metre long bamboo sticks to engage in a friendly yet spirited competition. It is believed that if the North team wins, there will be a bountiful rice harvest in the New Year, and if the South team wins, the price of rice will go up in the New Year.

⑤ Kakunodate Fire & Snow Festival
Known for its historic samurai district, Kakunodate (角館) offers a unique winter celebration that combines fire and snow. Held on 14 February every year, the Kakunodate Fire & Snow Festival (角館の火振りかまくら Kakunodate no Hiburi Kamakura) features kamakura (かまくら snow huts) lit with candles, creating an ethereal ambiance. Visitors can warm up by the bonfires while enjoying local delicacies.
The iconic “fire” part of the festival is the exciting hiburi dance performance, where participants take a charcoal-filled straw sack attached to a rope, light the sack on fire, and whirl the fire ball around themselves with the rope, creating a spinning ring of fire. It is a mesmerising sight to see, and certainly an unforgettable one!
The dance is a Lunar New Year event, and it is believed that the fire wards off bad spirits and bad luck, and ushers in blessings for the New Year.

The annual snow festival, held on 15–16 February, is famous for its kamakura, large igloo-like structures made of packed snow. Inside each kamakura, small altars dedicated to the water deity are placed, and locals serve warm mochi (餅 rice cakes) and amazake (甘酒 sweet rice wine) to visitors.
The Yokote Kamakura Festival emphasises community and hospitality, with hundreds of kamakura scattered throughout the city. There are also hundreds of mini kamakura along the banks of the Yokote River, each illuminated with candles.
