Discover the Autumn Charms of Iwate Prefecture!
Hello! My name is Matsuki, and I am a train conductor at the JR East Morioka General Management Centre. In this article, I’m excited to introduce you to the breathtaking autumn attractions of Iwate Prefecture, personally recommended by JR staff working here!
① Mt. Iwate

Mt. Iwate offers a spectacular display of vibrant autumn foliage that blankets the landscape, inviting you to breathe deeply and immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. Often called the “Nanbu Fuji” for its majestic, iconic shape, Mt. Iwate reveals different, stunning views depending on your vantage point.
Nearby, several hot spring resorts provide the perfect opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after a day of sightseeing. Be sure to include Mt. Iwate in your autumn travel itinerary!
② Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park)
The historic Morioka Castle ruins, once the seat of the powerful Nanbu clan, create a serene environment where history and nature blend seamlessly. Selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Castles” and “Top 100 Historical Parks,” the park still features impressive Edo-period stone walls and tranquil ponds, inviting visitors to experience the past firsthand.
In April, the park bursts into colour with cherry blossoms, creating a picturesque springtime scene, while in October, its vibrant autumn foliage reaches its peak, drawing many locals and tourists alike. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mt. Iwate from the park—a favourite photo spot. Easily accessible from Morioka Station, the park is also the perfect starting point for a stroll along historic Kaiun Bridge and the vibrant main shopping district. Take a leisure walk and escape the everyday hustle amidst scenic trees and rich history.
③ Jodogahama Beach
Located on the picturesque coast of Miyako City, Jodogahama Beach is one of the Sanriku region’s most iconic natural spots. Popular during summer, this beach offers a variety of activities at the Jodogahama Marine House, including island tours by motorboat, traditional “sappa” boat rides (small coastal fishing boats used by locals), boat rentals, and fishing.
You’ll also find a restaurant and souvenir shop featuring delicious local specialties from Sanriku. It’s a perfect destination to enjoy the sea breeze and the stunning coastal scenery.
④ Genbikei Gorge
Genbikei Gorge captivates visitors with its clear river waters, unique rock formations, and seasonal beauty sculpted over millennia. A local speciality here is the delightful “Flying Dango” experience—rice dumplings are sent across the river on a rope basket, arriving right in front of you for a fun and tasty treat. This charming tradition adds an extra layer of excitement to your visit.
⑤ Rokando Cave
Just a 3-minute walk from JR Kamaishi Line’s Kamiarisu Station, Rokando Cave is Japan’s closest limestone cave to a railway station. Stretching approximately 880 metres inside, the cave leads to the awe-inspiring “Ama no Iwato no Taki”(天の岩戸の滝)—a stunning 29-metre underground cascade.
The path inside can be slippery and narrow, offering a bit of a challenge. However, the magical atmosphere, sound of rushing water, and the spectacular waterfall at the end make it a memorable and mystical adventure.
Getting there
Travelling from Tokyo to Morioka City takes just about 2 hours and 10 minutes by Shinkansen. At Morioka Station, you can witness the fascinating process of Shinkansen Hayabusa and Komachi trains being connected and separated—a rare sight only seen at Morioka and Fukushima Stations.
We warmly invite you to come and explore Morioka and Iwate Prefecture by Shinkansen!
Experience the Joyful Train “Hinabi”
Launched in 2023, the “Hinabi” train features elegant red patterns on its white body symbolising the mountains, waves, rivers, and cherry blossoms of northern Tōhoku. Enjoy a stylish and spacious ride through the rich natural scenery of the region.
Relax and soak in the beauty of northern Tōhoku aboard Hinabi—we look forward to welcoming you to Iwate!
