As a city in one of the snowiest regions in the world, winter transforms Hirosaki City(弘前市) into a world of shimmering light, deep tradition, and pristine natural beauty. The deep culture of the region truly shines in this season, from candlelit valleys and snow lantern festivals to illuminated “winter-blooming” sakura and serene treks through ancient beech forests. Whether you’re drawn to soulful cultural celebrations or dreamlike winter landscapes, here are 4 winter highlights that will offer unforgettable moments capturing the heart of northern Japan.
1. Sawada Candle Festival
The Sawada Candle Festival is a cherished winter tradition in the Sawada (沢田) area of Hirosaki City, celebrated annually around the Lunar New Year. As night falls, hundreds of candles are carefully placed across the rocky surface of Iwayado (岩屋堂, a natural rock face inside the cave), illuminating the snowy landscape with a soft, otherworldly glow.
Visitors gather to offer prayers for a bountiful harvest and family safety, while the atmosphere is further enriched by torchlit processions and performances of local music—turning the entire valley into a scene of quiet, mystical beauty.

2. Winter Cherry Blossom Light-Up at Hirosaki Castle
Experience the magical beauty of Hirosaki Castle (弘前城) in winter with the Winter Cherry Blossom Light-Up. Snow-covered cherry trees are illuminated in soft pink light, creating the illusion of sakura at full bloom in the heart of winter. The frozen moat, blanketed in snow, resembles drifting petals, while snowy nights evoke a dreamlike cherry blossom storm.
The light-up event runs from December 1 to February 28, offering visitors a long window to experience this magical scene. A convenient loop bus operates from JR Hirosaki Station (弘前駅) via Hirosaki Park (弘前公園) and the Hirosaki University Hospital; simply alight at Hirosaki Park and enjoy a pleasant three-minute walk to the illuminated grounds.
