The Shimane Peninsula (島根半島 Shimane Hantō) is situated on the western side of Japan’s main island, sealed off by rugged mountains to the south and the Japan Sea to the north.
Given its relatively remote location, the area has remained largely unknown to those outside the country. However, with convenient access now possible via Izumo (出雲空港) and Yonago airports (米子空港 ), travellers can easily journey to the region and enjoy its many scenic and historic attractions.
Cycle around the peninsula’s gorgeous lakes

Lake Shinji (宍道湖) and Lake Nakaumi (中海) stretch along the south of the Shimane peninsula. In addition to offering breathtaking sunset views, the brackish waters of Lake Nakaumi create a thriving habitat for marine life.
For a great day trip, rent a bike and cycle from Matsue (松江)—on the western border of Lake Shinji—to the small island of Daikonshima (大根島) in Lake Nakaumi. While the 50km trek takes several hours, there are numerous cafes and restaurants along the way where you can relax or enjoy fresh seafood caught from the lake.

Hike or bike in the Daisen-Oki National Park

The Daisen-Oki National Park (大山隠岐国立公園) comprises a wide swath of land spanning the three prefectures of Tottori, Shimane, and Okayama. Among its many natural attractions, Mount Daisen (大山) offers the best options for hiking, cycling, and scenic exploration.

Hikers can start at Daisenji Temple (大山寺), which serves as the trailhead to Misen Peak (弥山). While only around 4km in length, the trek takes almost three hours due to its steep inclines. As the trees begin to thin, visitors will be able to take in expansive views looking out across the peninsula and the Japan Sea.
Another popular option is cycling from Mount Daisen to the coast. Start from the Goenzan Noroshi-dai Viewpoint (豪円山のろし台) to enjoy an approximately 20km downhill ride to the coast. Along the way, cyclists will enjoy riding through peaceful forests, freshwater streams, grasslands, and white sand beaches. The downhill journey makes for a relaxing pace, with time to stop along the way to enjoy stunning views and local attractions. Guided tours and rental cycles are available to assist those travelling through the area.
