It’s no secret that Japan is one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the world right now. Big cities, clean streets, delicious food, immersive culture–this country has got it all! And in our time as travel advisors a certain genre of question consistently pops up: “Where can I bring my significant other on a date?”
Whatever stage your love story is at, Japan offers no shortage of intimate, memorable destinations made for couples. Here are our five recommendations for the most romantic places to travel in Japan for a getaway you’ll both never forget.
1. Inokashira Park, Tokyo
We’ll start this list off with a destination that you won’t have to travel too far to get to. Inokashira Park is one of the most popular parks located within the bustling Tokyo Metropolis. Located a short distance from the trendy Kichijoji (吉祥寺) neighbourhood, which itself is a half-hour train ride from Tokyo Station(東京駅), this park is a hundred acres of prime public green space, complete with a large pond, petting zoo, and even aquarium!
For a romantic outing, couples have plenty of activities to enjoy. At Inokashira Pond, visitors can rent a colourful swan-shaped pedal boat or a two-person rowboat at the pond for a private experience and to soak up the park’s ambience. Anime and movie fans can also add the famous Ghibli Museum to their park date, enjoying the artworks and sculptures of some of Japan’s most iconic characters (reservations required).
Inokashira Park (井の頭恩賜公園)
Address: 1-18-31 Gotenyama, Musashino, Tokyo 180-0005
Access: 2-minute walk from Kichijōji Station (吉祥寺駅)
2. Minato Mirai, Yokohama
Yokohama(横浜) sits an hour’s ride outside of Tokyo City, and besides being a tourist destination juggernaut in its own right, is also a prime date spot for couples looking for atmosphere straight out of a J-drama. Specifically, I’d highly recommend a stroll around the Minato Mirai 21, the iconic area of Yokohama you’d see on every postcard!
Minato Mirai means “harbor of the future”, in part thanks to its skyline stacked with high-rise buildings and iconic silhouettes. Alongside being a great location along the water, this part of the city contains a wealth of attractions. Right out of Sakuragicho train station gate, you can ride the Air Cabin cable car to get a bird’s eye view of the port, or go even higher with a magnificent 360-degree panorama in the Cosmo World giant ferris wheel.
Purveyors of bespoke goods may enjoy a day of shopping at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse nearby, before wrapping up their evening with a romantic sunset stroll along Yamashita Park. As a lover of Japanese hot springs, one final stop I’d recommend you make while in the area would be the Yokohama Manyo Club–a hot spring facility which uses hot water transported from Atami and features relaxation facilities besides, including traditional Thai massage and Japanese washoku restaurants!
Minato Mirai(みなとみらい21)
Address: Nishi Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa 220-0012
Access: 2-minute walk from JR Yokohama Station (横浜駅)
Minato Mirai Manyo Club 横浜みなとみらい 万葉倶楽部
Address: 2-7-1 4F, Shinko, Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa 231-0001
Access: Take the Air Cabin from Sakuragicho Station(桜木町駅), then walk 4-minutes to get to the club.
3. Karuizawa, Nagano
If city dates aren’t your style and you’d prefer to solace in the country instead, you can hardly go wrong with a trip to Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. Widely known as the one the most popular summertime escapes for Tokyoites, Karuizawa is a perfect all-in-one destination for shopping, cafe-hopping, museums, forest trails and nature retreats.
The moment you arrive in Karuizawa Station, the first major attraction sitting right across the road is the massive Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza. A shopping mecca for big brands and outlet stores, this location is a paradise for both shopaholics and their significant others looking for a place to sit while waiting for them.
Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza (軽井沢・プリンスショッピングプラザ)
Address: Karuizawa, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano 389-0102
Access: 2-minute walk from Karuizawa Station (軽井沢駅)
If you’d prefer cafe-hopping, you can check out the main street of Old Karuizawa instead! Established bakeries, coffee shops, souvenir stores and eateries line both sides of Old Karuizawa Ginza Street, with the Shaw Memorial Chapel at the end.
4. Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest, Kanagawa
Theme Parks are quintessential locations when it comes to bringing someone out for a date. Everyone is already well familiar with the likes of Disneyland and Universal Studios, so today I’ll be recommending one of the lesser-known ones (as far as international audiences are concerned) that’s been built from the ground up to cater to couples.
Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest, also known as Sagamiko MORI MORI (さがみ湖 MORI MORI) is large amusement complex set against the backdrop of Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, just one hour away from the Tokyo City. In this place, you’ll be able to entertain yourself endless with a huge swathe of attractions including obstacle courses, thrill rides, camping sites and hot springs.
The real start of Sagamiko Resort, however, is undoubtedly the Sagamiko Illumillion, an illumination event in the park made up of nearly 6 million lightbulbs–one of the largest in Japan! Running from early November to April every year, this spectacle transforms the park into a neon winter wonderland, where you’ll not only be able to see dazzling displays of light, but also play on illumination-centred attractions like the Tamagotchi Starry Sky Pedal and the Rainbow Lift.
The 2026 edition of the Sagamiko Illumillion will run from 15 Nov 2025 – 10 May 2026.
Sagamiko Resort (相模湖リゾート)
Address: 1634 Wakayanagi, Midori Ward, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0175
Access: 20-minute bus ride from from Sagamiko Station (相模湖駅)
5. Onomichi City, Hiroshima
Our last recommendation for today will be a spot in west Japan quietly tucked away in Hiroshima Prefecture(広島県). Onomichi(尾道) is an understated port city located along the Seto Inland Sea, surrounded by hills and packed with historical charm. Its bullet train station makes it easily accessible from either Hakata City or Osaka City as a day trip, but I would absolutely recommend a short stay in order to fully recognise the romantic charm of this city.
For one, thanks to its picturesque location, many poets and artists have stayed here over the centuries, which is made evident by the various poetry stones scattered throughout the walking routes of the city. Onomichi is also host to several temples and cafes along its hilly slopes, especially in the area around the iconic Senkoji Temple Mountain Ropeway, where one can find alleys littered with cats and gems of Hiroshima cuisine galore.
Finally, one cannot bring up a mention of Onomichi without talking about its main claim to fame as the entry point to the Shimanami Kaido cycling route! Touted as the Cyclists’ Sanctuary of Japan, the Shimanami Kaido is a 70-kilometre stretch between the cities of Onomichi and Imabari, with six islands in-between connected by suspension bridges.
A place of natural beauty regardless of when you visit, this route is packed full of sights and activities along the way such as citrus farms, ice cream parlours, and restaurants filled with fresh seafood. The best part is that you don’t even need to bring your own bicycle—there are several shops in Onomichi where you’ll be able to rent your bride in advance, from a broad selection ranging from basic mamachari (Japanese city bicycles) to tandem bikes, e-bikes, or even mopeds!
